Support
We hear over and over again that it is difficult for disabled families to do ordinary things other families take for granted.
It is the constant struggle with the simple things that makes life more difficult for disabled families. For example, it can be difficult for some parents to take their non-disabled child to school because they have to wait for special transport to arrive to take their disabled child to school.
Many parents tell us they would like to take their disabled child to swimming classes but there is no support to allow them to do this. Working parents tell us how difficult it is to manage the logistics of childcare and get to work on time as the demands of impairment can make their lives so unpredictable.
ibk is developing a groundbreaking model of family support that helps families get on with life. The support we offer is designed by families to help them make the most of personalisation. Our support includes:
- information, empowerment and planning workshops for parents
- opportunities for children and young people to take part in mainstream leisure activities and possibilities of creative arts
- matching a PA or volunteer with family or young person
- payroll and budget management
- training and supervision for PAs and volunteers
- networking events for families and PAs
We help families design a support package that suits their needs. We offer families support they pay for through a Direct Payment, an Individual Budget or their own finances, and support from volunteers. We adapt the services we offer to meet the needs of individual families.
